SARAH E. LANE DEDICATION

A memorial ceremony to honor Sarah E. Lane, who died in 1919, as the only female Lighthouse Keeper from Mission Point Lighthouse in Traverse City, was held on October 28, 2025, in Monroe, Michigan.  She was buried next to her husband, John Lane, but she was without a grave marker until now.

Together, the Mission Point Lighthouse Keepers Association (MPLKA) and the Peter Dougherty Society provided the funding for the commemorative headstone for Sarah due to their strong ties to the history of the Old Mission Peninsula.  Sandra White and Karen Schenavar from Monroe, Michigan, past Mission Point Lighthouse Keepers, made the celebration possible due to their persistence and dedication to seeing that Sarah's memory is preserved and:

  • Preserve local and maritime history.

  • Promote gender recognition and historical equality.

  • Provide a place of reflection for future generations.

Mayor Robert E. Clark officiated the celebration on behalf of the City of Monroe, Michigan.  He recognized the many heroes of Monroe, Michigan, for their past dedication and service to the Country, along with Sarah and John Lane. Michael Huggins from Woodland Cemetery found a fitting tribute to Sarah Lane and the Lighthouse Keeper
Service that protected Michigan's Lakes and waters.
